An engine fire on April 28, onboard the US container ship President Eisenhower set the boat adrift about 24 miles off the Gaviota Coast.
According to the the US Coast Guard Lieutenant Tim Lae, the call came in around 3 a.m., reporting that an engine fire had put the ship’s power plant out of commission.
After the incident, a US Coast Guard helicopter and small boat rescue team were deployed.
The ship is currently drifting in a northerly direction, away from the Channel Islands and their surrounding marine sanctuary.
What is more, a US Coast Guard cutter is on the scene with the Eisenhower, whose crew put out the fire. No one was injured.
A commercial tug is also on the scene to tow the ship back to Los Angeles Harbor.
