Thanks to EU funding from the EU INTERREG IV(a) 2 seas programme and the PATCH project – Ports Adapting to Change, Portsmouth Port has developed a new terminal building which incorporates the latest green technology.
This includes wind catchers on the roof, sea water to flush toilets and a seawater harvesting system which uses a revolutionary heat exchange pump that uses seawater to heat and cool the terminal building.
The new terminal is the first public building and ferry terminal in the United Kingdom to be heated and cooled using thermal energy from seawater to minimize terminal carbon footprint through integration of ‘Eco-friendly’ technologies.
In addition, seawater flushing of public conveniences cuts water consumption through costly mechanical air-conditioning has been replaced by additional roof top ‘windcatchers’.
