Kristian Hammer, Product Manager for AFI and Senior Consultant at DNV, has shared the latest data from DNV’s Alternative Fuels Insight (AFI) platform, which reveals a significant rise in alternative-fuelled vessel orders for February 2025.
A total of 34 new orders were placed for vessels powered by alternative fuels, with 33 of these being LNG-fuelled container vessels. The remaining order was for an ammonia-fuelled general cargo vessel. The trend towards LNG-powered container vessels remains strong, accounting for all but one of the orders for alternative-fuelled vessels so far in 2025, and the vast majority since mid-2024.

In addition to the rise in LNG-fuelled vessel orders, there is also a notable increase in LNG bunkering. Eight new orders were placed for LNG bunker vessels in February, representing a 50% expansion of the LNG bunker vessel orderbook.
