The Danish government presented 25 initiatives for a new cyber security strategy, which amongst others, will improve maritime navigation. Denmark will allocate NOK 1 billion for the strategy, a development welcomed by shipping firms. In addition, energy, transport, telecommunications, finance and health are included in the strategy.
For each sector, strategies for cyber and information security work should be prepared by the end of 2018. The Ministry of Business is responsible for the sub-strategy in the maritime and will establish a cyber security unit.

Asbjørn Overgaard Christiansen, Head of Innovation and Digitalization in Danish Shipping, said:
It is very positive that the Government, with the strategy, is promoting enhanced public-private cooperation in this important area. By working together we can better protect ourselves from attacks and be prepared as soon as they occur. Danish shipping companies are very much looking forward to working on a sub-strategy on shipping.
These initiatives include data driven business processes, multiple sensors and ship monitoring and remote control. They can optimize processes, improve customer experience and ensure more environmentally friendly operation.
Mr. Christiansen added:
The increased dependence on digital tools makes shipping companies vulnerable to cyber attacks. That’s why it’s essential that maritime traffic is at the forefront of cyber security and that it is rooted in the employees’ awareness.
Moreover, Denmark will establish a 24-hour cyber-course center to monitor the current national security situation, and increase public awareness of IT security.
