Denmark’s Ministry of Industry, Business and Financial Affairs published an Executive Order describing the training and qualification requirements for masters, officers and other personnel who are part of the guard on the bridge for ships operating in polar areas.
Namely, Masters, superiors and officers who are part of the security guard on the bridge of ships sailing in polar areas, must:
- Have valid qualifications in basic training for ships sailing in polar areas as required by the polar code, and valid qualifications in the management of operations for ships sailing in polar areas;
- Have completed approved education in accordance with the STCW Code, Section AV / 4, Section 1, as set out in Annex 1;
- Have completed basic education;
- Have at least 2 months of service as part of security guard at the bridge, either at management level or operational level within polar areas, or equivalent approved cruise time;
- Have completed approved education according to the STCW Code, Section AV / 4, Section 2, as set out in Appendix 2;
Evidence of validity for the above requirements will be valid for 5 years. In order to get a new proof, the application must be made to the Danish Maritime Authority, and can be made before the expiration of the certificate. To get the renewal, the following are needed:

- Approved cruise time in an area where proof of this order is required for at least 2 months in the last 5 years;
- Completed approved education.
The Executive Order will enter into force on 1 July 2018. Until 1 July 2020, seafarers who have guarded on the bridge in polar areas before 1 July 2018 have to hold valid qualifications in basic training for ships sailing in polar areas. To do that they must meet the following:
- At least 3 months approved shipping time at deck service during the period 1 July 2013 to 1 July 2018, at operational or management level, in ships sailing in polar areas or equivalent approved shipping time; or
- Completed education in accordance with STCW code section BV / g.
Moreover, until 1 July 2020, seafarers who, before 1 July 2018, have been involved in guarding the bridge in polar areas, should hold valid qualifications in the management of operations for ships sailing in polar areas as required by the Polar Code. For this the following are needed:
- At least 3 months approved cruise time at deck service during the period 1 July 2013 to 1 July 2018, at management level, in ships sailing in polar areas or equivalent approved shipping time; or
- Completed training in accordance with section BV / g of the STCW Code combined with at least 2 months approved seagoing service during the period 1 July 2013 to 1 July 2018 at management level in ships sailing in polar areas or equivalent approved cruise time.
The Danish Maritime Authority will decide if the requirement for equivalent approved cruise time is met.
