Danish Shipping is actively advocating for a pricing mechanism to narrow the cost gap between fossil fuels and green alternatives.
Nina Porst, Director of Climate, Environment, and Security at Danish Shipping, emphasized the importance of maintaining momentum from last summer’s climate agreement. According to Porst, while significant breakthroughs may not be expected at this meeting, she stressed the need for intensified negotiations among key players to pave the way for effective outcomes.
The 82nd meeting of the IMO’s Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) is crucial as it brings together representatives from the IMO’s 176 member countries to discuss regulations aimed at achieving climate-neutral shipping by 2050.
Danish Shipping supports the ambition for climate-neutral shipping and outlines critical proposals for consideration, including establishing a pricing mechanism to bridge the cost gap between fuel types, implementing a technical framework to reduce greenhouse gas intensity, and adopting a “well-to-wake” approach that considers the full life cycle of fuels.
There is a need for an agreement that also ensures support, including financial aid, for countries such as the so-called Small Island Developing States, which are particularly hard hit by climate change. We need an agreement that contributes to a just and equitable transition, where all countries participate.
… concluded Nina Porst.
