Two dock workers were killed, after the crane of the general cargo ship ‘Bistari 8’ collapsed during cargo operations at Pontianak, Western Kalimantan, Indonesia, on 4 April. According to local sources, the crane reportedly collapsed after trying to lift too heavy weight.
One dock worker was instantly killed by the collapsed crane, while the other man tried to escape the broken crane and fell, and died in hospital as a result.
The cause of the incident is under investigation, although first indications suggest the crane was overloaded.
Pontianak City Police is currently examining six witnesses, including the captain, the operator of the crane, the crew, the loading and unloading coordinator from the owner company, and agents from the ship.
The persons responsible may be charged with negligence, a police spokesperson said.
In February this year, a similar accident took place at Dwikora Port, Pontianak, but luckily, without casualties.
