As of July 2024, container movement in Panama’s port system has shown significant growth, according to data from the Panama Maritime Authority (AMP).
From January to July 2024, container movement in units amounted to 3,135,968, compared to 2,629,843 in the same period of 2023, representing an increase of 19.2%. Container movement in TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit, the cargo capacity of a 20-foot container) reflects an 18.5% increase, with 5,598,641 TEUs in 2024 versus 4,722,746 in the previous year.
Meanwhile, cargo movement in both state and private ports showed a rise of 15%, comparing 70,831,169 metric tons as of July this year to 61,566,366 metric tons in the same period of 2023.
Finally, Domestic passenger transport (people traveling by boat from one point to another in national waters, including foreigners) also showed a growth of 1.5%, with 1,233,685 passengers transported by water by July 2024, compared to 1,215,187 by July 2023.
