Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Sea6 Energy Private Limited for collaborative research and development focused on the commercialization of technologies that convert seaweed biomass into biofuels and chemicals.
Under the terms of the MoU, HPCL will work with Sea6 Energy to jointly develop and scale up technologies aimed at transforming seaweed biomass into sustainable fuels and chemicals. Additionally, Sea6 Energy will focus on improving the upstream processes of seaweed farming and harvesting, making them more cost-effective.
As informed, seaweed has notable advantages as a source for biofuel production. Unlike land-based crops, it does not compete with food production and requires no fertilizers or irrigation. It can be cultivated in coastal regions unsuitable for traditional farming. Additionally, seaweed grows much faster than terrestrial crops, with some species doubling their biomass in days.
The collaboration between HPCL and Sea6 Energy, formalized on December 9, 2024, aims to develop and scale technologies to convert seaweed biomass into biofuels and chemicals.
This partnership supports India’s efforts in energy security, technological advancement, and achieving the goals outlined in the National Biofuel Policy.
