SAFETY4SEA is pleased to announce that Dimitrios Fafalios, President, INTERCARGO has received the 2019 SAFETY4SEA Leadership Award at a prestigious award ceremony which successfully concluded on October the 1st at Yacht Club of Greece in Athens, the evening ahead of the SAFETY4SEA Conference.
Dimitrios Fafalios, President, INTERCARGO received the SAFETY4SEA Leadership Award, sponsored by SQE MARINE for providing industry leadership and promoting shipping interests in the global maritime community especially in the way of his involvement with the work of INTERCARGO.
Presenting the award Mrs. Aggeliki Theodosiou, Client Service Manager, SQE Marine, said “Having leaders who work together with all maritime community to bring change is not an easy task, especially for our industry which is still considered to follow a more traditional approach. This is why we need inspirational leaders who are able to strike the right balance between achieving great improvements and managing people. In addition to this, it is important to reward significant efforts and acknowledge excellence.”
Accepting the award Mr. Dimitrios Fafalios stated: ‘’On behalf of INTERCARGO, its membership and secrerariat, I am honored to accept the award. SAFETY4SEA and INTERCARGO share common goals in the promotion of safety and quality in shipping and indeed in dry bulk shipping. INTERCARGO’s 2,200 entered vessels managed by 142 member companies strive daily for a higher quality of operation and a level of safety above the industry average’’
Dimitrios Fafalios is the President of INTERCARGO, The International Association of Dry Cargo Shipowners, since January 2019. INTERCARGO currently has 2,200 vessel-members. The Association takes forward its Members’ positions to the IMO, as well as to other shipping and international industry fora, having free and fair competition as a principle. Mr. Fafalios replaced Mr. Ioannis Platsidakis, who completed 6 creative years at the wheel of the Association. Also, he is President and Director of Fafalios Shipping SA from 2008 to today. From 1984 to 2008, Mr. Fafalios held several managerial positions at the historic company Fafalios Ltd. in London. He is a graduate of the Naval Architecture and Ship Building Department of the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, and holds a Masters Degree in Ocean Systems Management from MIT. Mr. Fafalios has previously held the position of Chairman of the Technical Committee of INTERCARGO, while he still holds important positions in various shipping associations and committees.
The Leadership Award is a special category of award, nominated directly by the SAFETY4SEA editorial team, without the open voting procedure. SAFETY4SEA Awards are held annually within the scope of awarding industry’s outstanding practices for Excellence, Sustainability, Training, Technology, Initiative and Leadership. Other winners of the 2019 SAFETY4SEA Awards are: Alpha Bulkers Shipmanagement Inc. for the Dry Bulk Operator Award, Springfield Shipping Co. for the Tanker Operator Award, Sustainable Shipping Initiative for the Initiative Award, Metropolitan College/ Warshash Maritime Academy for the Training Award, Synergy Group for the Technology Award, The North of England P&I Club for the Initiative Award and Dr. Sadan Kaptanoglu, BIMCO for the Personality award.
