Repsol, Spanish energy company, and Brittany Ferries extended their agreement that they signed in February on supplying LNG to the ferry operator’s Spanish operations. The agreement sees the energy company supplying LNG bunker fuel to Brittany Ferries’ Salamanca and Santoña during the ships’ regular visits on routes linking Portsmouth, UK and northern Spain, beginning in 2022.
Following February’s agreement, the energy company is expected to construct two LNG bunker terminals, located at the ports of Bilbao and Santander, where the ferry company conducts its Spanish operations. The agreement sees that each terminal will have an intermediate storage tank of 1,000 cubic meters to guarantee an uninterrupted supply.

Frédéric Pouget, fleet and operations manager Brittany Ferries commented
Liquefied Natural Gas offers significant environmental advantages over traditional marine fuels, and we’re extremely pleased to work with Repsol on LNG fuelling operations for our future ferries in Spain.
Thus, he continued that Salamanca and Santoña will be the second and third LNG-powered vessels and the first to serve the shipping lines to and from Northern Spain. Mr Pouget added that ‘these new terminals will allow regular, flexible and reliable deliveries during the calls of Salamanca and Santoña in our Spanish ports.’
Salamanca and Santoña will follow Honfleur, which is being constructed in Germany and is expected to begin operations in early 2020.
