Officials are trying to refloat a barge that ran aground, damaging its hull on Quadra Island, British Columbia, on November 9. As Transport Canada informed, it is now considering a salvage plan, and when the barge is refloated, it will be towed to a facility near Campbell River for repairs.
The Campbell River lifeboat station will monitor the operation, with a Transport Canada inspector looking over the barge once it is anchored.
The Canadian Coast Guard had earlier informed that a barge being towed by a tug grounded north of Cape Mudge. Luckily, all six people on board are safe and were not hurt. However, the hull of the barge was damaged, stopping plans to refloat the carrier were halted.
As of Monday, the barge was stable and no operational activities took place. The barge is carrying empty rail cars and containers on its deck.
There is no sign of any marine pollution, while ships in the area are asked to keep a safe distance of just over 300 metres away, so as to not interfere with assessment and salvage efforts.
