GTT, Lloyd’s Register (LR) and Dalian Shipbuilding (DSIC), started the second phase of the “30,000m³ B-FREE LNG carrier” Joint Development Project (JDP). The projects has set as a target the creation of a ballast-free medium-sized LNG carrier, which will comply with the new BWM Convention.
The first phase of the project was conducted by by DSIC, GTT and Lloyd’s Register, and developed a new design of ballast-free medium-sized LNG carrier, which will comply with the new IMO Ballast Water Management Convention, and will use membrane containment systems.
The ship can low construction and operational costs, and has received an Approval in Principle from Lloyd’s Register in December 2017.
The second phase of the project will further develop the design, to validate the initial results achieved during Phase I. To this, the partnership will apply more detailed analysis and verification, including model testing.

In a meeting held at Lloyd’s Register premises in Shanghai, the three partners welcomed Exmar as a new partner to the JDP.
