Mark Russell

Mark joined Gard as a claims executive in 1996. Before that, he was at sea for six years, principally on tankers, but also on container ships. Mark finished his sea-going career acting as a Chief Officer on ferries operating to/from the Isle of Wight. He has a first class honours degree in Maritime Studies from Solent University. As well as being the author of the Gard "Guidance on Bills of Lading", Mark contributed greatly to the earlier
publication "Guidance to Masters".
Following a number of years handling all types of P&I claims, Mark assumed management of the Gard UK claims team in 2006. In the summer of 2010 he took up his current position and is responsible for cargo claims (dry and liquid) across all Gard offices. Amongst other things, his role focuses on high exposure/complex cases and best cargo claim handling practices and processes.
Mark represents Gard in the International Group Claims Co-operation Sub-Committee and has also attended on-site in casualties.

Tackling cargo misdeclaration – a first line of defence against container fires

Container fires may now be occurring on a weekly basis and in Gard’s experience most are associated with cargo misdeclaration. However just as with tackling the fire itself, tackling misdeclaration is a significant industry challenge.
