ABB has secured a contract from Samsung Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. to supply its permanent magnet shaft generator technology for 15 liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers.
These 174,000-cbm capacity vessels will be delivered between mid-2026 and August 2028 to serve QatarEnergy’s supply chain needs. This marks Samsung Heavy Industries’ largest order for LNG carriers and the largest project involving ABB’s generator systems. As explained, the permanent magnet shaft generator system improves fuel efficiency by optimizing the conversion of marine engine power into electrical energy.
According to ABB, the system offers better performance than traditional auxiliary engines and helps reduce fuel costs by up to 4%, with potential for an additional 1% efficiency gain when integrated with ABB’s ACS880 Converter and Control System.
The scale of this order suggests that key LNG stakeholders now recognize permanent magnet shaft generator system benefits that are widely accepted by owners in the container ship, oil tanker and bulk carrier markets

To remind, in early September, QatarEnergy signed an agreement with China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) for the construction of six additional QC-Max vessels, enhancing its fleet to a total of 128 LNG vessels.
