All seafarers were rescued from a bulker that was hit by fire at an Indonesian port on October 29.
The fire started in the engine room of the urea carrier Abusamah at Cilegon, according to the ministry of transport’s directorate general of sead.
After that, the salvage operation took place with national search and rescue agency Basarnas and the country’s navy. The vessel was loading ammonium phosphate at the time of the fire.
According to local media, the vessel burned while loading fertiliser at jetty 3B Krakatau International Port. The fire was first seen from the ship’s engine room. The bulker had already loaded about 1,300 tonnes when the incident began.
Luckily, quick action was taken, managing to partially evacuate the ship. The captain and five other crew members remained on board before the final evacuation operation.
The vessel was later towed to an anchorage for safety reasons as firefighting continued.
No injuries were reported among the crew.
Eventually, the fire was brought under control by three tugs, while cooling operations continued.
