The container ship Pangaon Express partially sank in heavy waves in the Bay of Bengal on July 6, while en route from Chittagong to Pangaon Inland Container Terminal in Keraniganj.
According to the Chittagong Port Authority, all crew members onboard were rescued safely, and a salvage operation was also initiated. The Pangaon Express transports containers from Bangladesh’s Chattogram seaport to the Pangaon Terminal near Dhaka.
The loss of stability was most likely caused or aided by collapsed containers. On July 6, around 11:00 a.m., a distress call was issued. A fishing boat rescued all 12 crew members and two Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority employees and brought them to shore.
Because several containers were lost at sea, the Chattogram Port Authority is advising ships in the vicinity to exercise caution and keep an eye out for containers.
