As part of their Good Catch series, American P&I Club has published an animation to inform about combustible materials and fire hazards.
According to the American Club, combustible materials, open fire doors, small fuel and oil leaks can quickly become fire hazards, creating risk to crew members and their vessels.
SOLAS regulations contain specific requirements for the design, construction, and arrangement of oil and fuel piping, outlined by maritime regulations. Similarly, the Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) provides guidelines on piping arrangements onboard ships.
However, studies of fire incidents reported to the International Union of Marine Insurance (IUMI) have shown that the requirements of SOLAS and the MSC have not always been fully implemented. This issue involves both the piping arrangement itself and human factors.
Make a Good Catch by utilizing good engineering practices to identify hazards beforehand and eliminating potential fire sources.
