Wärtsilä presented the Wärtsilä HY for Dredger, a new product based on Wärtsilä’s HY hybrid propulsion technology. Its goal is to improve the efficiency and sustainability of dredging operations. The new technology is able to optimise performance throughout the vessel’s lifecycle.
The HY for Dredger consists of a variety of power sources, as the engines and energy storage systems, the power distribution equipment, and the Energy Management System (EMS); The latter makes sure of instant load taking and dynamic power demand.
The combination of the systems that the technology consists of provides smooth and continuous operations in all operating conditions, allowing the engines to run at optimal load, therefore increasing energy efficiency.

Moreover, the mitigation of stress to mechanical components results in maintenance costs and extended turbocharger life. Sustainability is enhanced with reduced emission levels in all modes, with zero emissions when running in full battery mode.
Giulio Tirelli, Wärtsilä Marine’s Director of Sales & Business Intelligence commented
Real operational data from the field was analysed so as to understand exactly the challenges to be overcome, and the product was engineered accordingly.
Concluding, Henrik Wilhelms, Director, Offshore & Special Vessels added that this technology has a lower environmental impact, better fuel efficiency, and reduced maintenance because of fewer running hours.
