Republic of the Marshall Islands, Marine Safety Advisory
The Republic of the Marshall Islands has issued a Marine Safety advisory regarding speed restriction zones established by NOAA.
NOAA has announced that voluntary vessel speed restriction zone (Dynamic Management Areas – DMA) has been established 130NM East of New York Harbor to protect an aggregation of 3 right whales sighted in this area on 10 June 2013.
This DMA is in effect immediately through 25 June 2013. Mariners are requested to route around these areas or transit through them at 10 knots or less.
Mariners are requested to avoid or transit at 10 knots or less inside specific areas where persistent aggregations of right whales have been sighted.
Additionaly, Active Seasonal Management Areas (SMAs) have been established. and mandatory speed restrictions of 10 knots or less (50 CFR 224.105) are in effect.
