The vehicle carrier Malaysia Star caught fire as it was traveling from Port Klang to Kota Kinabalu in the Malacca Strait on 2 December.
The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) was alerted to the fire, which reportedly started near the vessel’s fuel tank, requiring significant firefighting efforts. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
Furthermore, as of the latest updates, no pollution has been reported from the vessel, and authorities are continuing to monitor the situation. At the time of the incident, the ship was approximately 9.1 miles off Tanjung Laboh. The vessel was carrying 19 crew members, 18 of whom were Filipino and one was Malaysian.
A Maritime police boat and two MMEA patrol boats were quickly dispatched to the scene. None of the crew members were injured and they were safely rescued from the vessel and transferred to the patrol boats, then taken to the Batu Pahat Maritime Zone Jetty.
