The crew of US Coast Guard rescued six people on Saturday, April 6, as their boat started taking on water 25 miles west of Sunny Isles. The rescue took place at about 9 a.m. after an emergency positioning beacon drew the attention of the MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Miami. No injuries were reported.
Specifically, Coast Guard 7th District watchstanders received notification from a Personal Locator Beacon.
After the notification, they launched an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Miami and the Cutter Cochito to investigate.
When the crew arrived at the area of the incident, the boat was rapidly taking on water and sinking.
The crew rescued all six of the people from the water and transmitted them to a Coast Guard Station Fort Lauderdale small-boat crew where they were transported to Haulover Park in good condition.
Concluding, as Lt.j.g. Paul Puddington, the Cochito’s commanding officer stated
This case highlights the importance of how an EPIRB can save your life and the life of your loved ones.
