In light of the 4th of July, celebrated in the US, the US coast guard tweeted a video explaining the difference between flares and fireworks to inform civilians of the difference, because during that day the coastguard receives hundreds of false flare sighting reports.
According to the Coast Guard, the usual and most obvious differences are:
Flares are typically red or orange. They don’t last long and they are used for emergency situations and when one is in danger when at sea.
Fireworks are colourful and most of the times they’re accompanied by a loud ‘boom’ or whistle. They leave long smoke trails.
