The Union of Greek Shipowners (UGS) highlighted the leading role of Greece in international shipping, with Greeks managing 20% of the global fleet.
According to the Union of Greek Shipowners, Greek shipowners manage 20% of the global fleet with the percentages to be even higher for certain sub-categories, specifically for bulk carriers, tankers and LNG carriers.
In addition, 25% of the global fleet of bulk carriers is under Greek management, while the corresponding percentages for tankers and LNG carriers are 30% and 25%. UGS also highlights the significant presence of Greeks in liner shipping, as 8.1% of the global containership fleet and 8.3% of the global vehicle carrier fleet are under Greek management.
To remind, a McKinsey report pointed out that Greece has consistently ranked among the world’s top maritime nations, holding a leading position in shipping capacity based on deadweight tonnage.
The report estimated that the Greek shipping sector contributes roughly $14 billion to the domestic economy and supports around 150,000 jobs, both directly (seafarers, shipmanagement) and indirectly (across various shipping-related sectors like hospitality, real estate, and media).
