Following the fire incident onboard the Zim Kingston containership, technical experts are about to board the vessel and evaluate the causes of the accident.
Namely, DANAOS Shipping managers of Zim Kingston, received permission by the Canadian Coast Guard to allow the boarding of technical experts from the company as well as two marine firefighters, who are now on board the vessel.
Permission was also given for six members of the vessel’s crew to return but adverse weather conditions have not allowed them to board yet.
The two firefighters arrived on board to evaluate the situation and will be joined later by four more firefighters as well as an expert’s team who will be responsible for the final report to the Canadian Coast Guard before the ZIM KINGSTON is cleared to enter the port of Vancouver.
To remind, on October 23rd two damaged containers onboard the ZIM KINGSTON caught fire, following the collapse and loss overboard of several containers earlier that day, due to extreme weather.
The Master of the vessel ordered the evacuation of 16 members of the crew with the assistance of the local coastguard, while he and other key personnel remained on board to oversee the fire extinguishing effort. No injuries were reported and the fire appears to has been subdued.
In light of the situation, DANAOS commissioned an Expert’s team & Marine Firefighting company to come on board and ensure conditions are appropriate for the safe return of the vessel’s crew.
The company has been working in close cooperation with local authorities from the very first, committed to following all actions necessary to mitigate the consequences of the incident.
