The Volgoneft-212 snapped in half on 15 November after being hit by a large wave during a storm while transiting the Kerch Strait.
The bow of the tanker sank, while the stern remained afloat for a bit longer before succumbing to the storm. The ship was reportedly carrying 4,300 tons of low-grade biofuel and had 15 crew members on board, 12 of whom have been rescued. Tragically, at least one crew member lost their life, and two others are still missing.
Although detailed reports on environmental damage are not yet available, it has been confirmed that an oil spill occurred from the vessel.
Furthermore, shortly afterwards, another cargo transporter, the Volgoneft-239, got into difficulties in the same area. It was carrying 4 tonnes of fuel oil.
However, the emergencies ministry said that the vessel had run aground 80 metres from shore near the port of Taman at the south end of the Kerch Strait. It was concluded that the crew of 14 aboard the vessel were not in immediate danger and were left aboard the vessel till the storm subsided.
