Mediterranean Shipping Company announced that it has hired-off the vessel "Kia Ora". MSC was the former charterer of the vessel and said that when it learned that AMSA banned the ship from Australian waters due to crew underpayment, it immediately off-hired the ship.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority has banned the Liberian-flagged container ship 'MSC Kia Ora' from Australian ports for three months, after the vessel's operator failed to ensure crew were paid their wages in full and on time, and that critical equipment was maintained.

The Seafarers Happiness Index 2017 Q4 presented thought-provoking statistics regarding seafarers welfare, establishing a downward trend which raised important discussions as to what can be done to address this decline.

Thousands of union members at Hyundai Heavy Industries voted in favor of a wage agreement with management, as the company reported a net loss widened to 572.3 billion won in the fourth quarter of 2017, from 351.8 billion won in the red a year earlier, due to declining order backlogs.

The eleven crew of the Panamanian flagged 'Agean Princess' returned home to India and Myanmar, after being held in Ajman, UAE, for 17 months, due to a dispute between their ships operator and owner. However, ITF stressed that the crew are still owed unpaid wages going back to 2015, totaling over USD 916,000.

The third meeting of the Special Tripartite Committee established in accordance with Article XIII of the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 will take place at the ILO in Geneva, from 23 to 27 April 2018.

The UK government's National Minimum Wage and seafarers will not tackle chronic low pay to foreign seafarers, which is driving the decline of UK seafarer numbers and the national maritime skills base,  including on routes between UK ports and to the offshore oil and gas sector, according to Seafarer Ratings union RMT. 

UK Border Force patrols will be handing out information to seafarers and employers in more than 50 languages promoting minimum wage law. UK also said that all seafarers working in UK waters must be paid at least minimum wage rates.

All ships flying the UAE flag trading internationally, as well as all ships operating in UAE waters above 200 gross tons, must have a financial security system to protect seafarers against abandonment, death or injury, according to a circular published by the Federal Transport Authority.

“For the ITF, this means a potential sea change for transport workers, in aviation, in ports, and in public transport. We will now work within this agreement to build protection for them as workers, with good, sustainable jobs, recognising international standards and best practice,” ITF stated.
