International Ice Patrol starts operations, informing for icebergs

The Coast Guard International Ice Patrol announced that it's starting operations for the 2019 ice season as from February 5, 2019 and will resume production of the North American Ice Service (NAIS) daily iceberg warning products from its operations center in New London, Connecticut. NAIS provides iceberg warning from February to August, in the timeframe when icebergs are a great threat to transatlantic shipping.

Standard club summarises vessel incidental discharge act provisions

Standard Club launched a new framework concerning the regulations on vessel incidental discharge act (VIDA). VIDA phases out provisions of the Vessel General Permit (VGP) and existing USCG regulations over a time frame of about 4 years. Despite the fact that the wide implications of the new law are still being assessed, the club presented the most important provisions of VIDA.

USCG seizes $3 million in cocaine off Arecibo

The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter 'Margaret Norvell' (WPC - 1105) offloaded 200 pounds of cocaine on January 30 and transferred custody of four suspected smugglers to U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agents in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. The Coast Guard and Caribbean Border Interagency Group (CBIG) authorities found the $3 million dollar cocaine shipment and apprehended the suspected smugglers, following the interdiction of a go-fast vessel on 28 January night in waters north of Arecibo, Puerto Rico.
