The US Coast Guard announced it is withdrawing two notices of proposed rulemaking based on findings that the proposed rules are no longer appropriate to the current state of spill response in the chemical industry. USCG aims to better analyze the current spill response capabilities of the chemical industry before conducting any further rulemaking.

The Coast Guard International Ice Patrol announced that it's starting operations for the 2019 ice season as from February 5, 2019 and will resume production of the North American Ice Service (NAIS) daily iceberg warning products from its operations center in New London, Connecticut. NAIS provides iceberg warning from February to August, in the timeframe when icebergs are a great threat to transatlantic shipping.

Standard Club launched a new framework concerning the regulations on vessel incidental discharge act (VIDA). VIDA phases out provisions of the Vessel General Permit (VGP) and existing USCG regulations over a time frame of about 4 years. Despite the fact that the wide implications of the new law are still being assessed, the club presented the most important provisions of VIDA.

US Coast Guard published a Bulletin concerning a cyber incident that occurred on a commercial vessel. The paper aims to inform possible victims how to prevent cyber attacks and also provides additional information on who to inform if one is under attack. USCG's National Response Centre (NRC) remains the primary contact for notifications concerning SAs and BoSs, including cyber.

US Coast Guard came to the rescue of two men, transmitting them to the hospital as they were working on an enclosed lifeboat when it released and both went over it. The incident took place 70 miles east of Chincoteague, on February 6. They both suffered injuries, including stomach laceration and broken leg.

The crew of the USCG Cutter 'Forward' offloaded approximately 34,780 pounds of cocaine, Tuesday in Port Everglades, worth an estimated $466 million wholesale seized during patrols in international waters in the Eastern Pacific Ocean. The drugs were interdicted off the coasts of Mexico, and Central and South America.

As US Coast Guard announced one member of the buoy Hickory died on January 31 when a crane fell over in a buoy yard outside of Homer, Alaska. The victim was identified as Chief Warrant Officer Michael Kozloski, 35, a resident of Mahopac, New York. Kozloski was working in the tender's storage yard, close to Homer's Pioneer Dock. 

The US Coast Guard cooperates with the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) to ensure alignment regarding training for mariners working on ferry vessels that transport HAZMAT. Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR) found in 49 CFR Parts 171-180 govern ferry vessels that transport hazardous materials.

The US Coast Guard Marine Safety Centre issued the 16th Coast Guard Ballast Water Management System type approval certificate to Envirocleanse LLC for its inTank ballast water treatment system. USCG granted the Certificate after a detailed review of the manufacturer’s type approval application determined the system met the requirements of 46 CFR 162.060.

The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter 'Margaret Norvell' (WPC - 1105) offloaded 200 pounds of cocaine on January 30 and transferred custody of four suspected smugglers to U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agents in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. The Coast Guard and Caribbean Border Interagency Group (CBIG) authorities found the $3 million dollar cocaine shipment and apprehended the suspected smugglers, following the interdiction of a go-fast vessel on 28 January night in waters north of Arecibo, Puerto Rico.
