Despite a century of abolition efforts, under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, passed by Congress in 2016, skippers still have the authority to punish 'troublesome sailors' with nothing to eat but bread and water, but this is to change from the very first day of 2019 with an update of the US Uniform Code of Military Justice.

The Government Accountability Office (GAO) has completed a review that identifies that, even if the US Navy has already taken initial steps to rebuild military readiness, years of sustained attention will be required in order to fully overcome the challenges.

The US warship USS John S. McCain was successfully launched from dry dock and moored pierside at Commander, Fleet Activities Yokosuka, on 27 November. The US Navy's Supervisor of Salvage and Diving successfully removed 229,000 gallons of oil from the sunken World War II vessel, ex-Prinz Eugen located in the Kwajalein Atoll. Each oil-filled, accessible tank was hot tapped, pumped free of recoverable oil, and sealed to prevent any leakage.

Officials from the US Navy have confirmed an ongoing investigation of 15 sailors over allegations of LSD abuse. Most of the sailors are reportedly working in the nuclear reactor department of the aircraft carrier 'Ronald Reagan'. Two sailors are already heading to court-martial accused of using, possessing and distributing the drug.

The US Navy is seeking maritime industry's input as it proposed a medium unmanned surface vehicle. The objective of this input is to examine if the industry is able to provide a solution within a certain time frame at an affordable cost. The MUSV should be 12 meters to 50 meters long.
