During his presentation at the last GREEN4SEA Conference, Mr. David Nichol, Senior Loss Prevention Executive, UK P&I Club, provided a brief overview of old and new challenges surrounding biofouling and what is in store for the future.

Sophia Bullard, Crew Health Programme Director at UK P&I Club, provides her comments on how to address bullying and harassment on board ships. Ms. Bullard says that companies and management should be receptive to change and adopt a zero tolerance approach to deal with bullying and harassment at sea. In fact, during the last ten years, there is an increase on the focus regarding harassment in maritime.

The UK Club issued a risk focus on burn injuries onboard vessels. Burns can be some of the most painful and dangerous of personal injuries that may be inflicted both at work and in domestic situations. The potential sources and causes of burn injuries can be varied and may range from a painful but minor inconvenience to life changing injury and death.

During the 2019 SAFETY4SEA Cyprus Conference, Mr. David Nichol, Senior Loss Prevention Executive, UK P&I Club, focused on accidents relating to entry into enclosed spaces onboard ships, which ‘continue to blight the shipping industry’. The dangers associated with enclosed spaces are well known – so why the unremitting level of casualties?

As the UK P&I Club informs, on 21 February the English High Court ordered charterers to provide security for the release of a ship under an LOI given to enable cargo to be delivered without production of the original bills of lading. Providing its comment on the decision, the UK Club stated that it is clearly a positive development that the Court interpreted clause 3 of the IG standard LOI favourably for shipowners.

UK P&I Club issued a circular concerning the Venezuelan Sanctions the US imposed to PDVSA on January. The Club addressed that PDVSA has been made a target of the US. In the meantime, a number of General Licences have been issued with authorisations of varying duration to allow U.S. citizens to wind down existing business with PdVSA or its subsidiaries.

Marlins will cooperate with UK P&I Club to support seafarers’ health and well-being. Namely, Marlins, V.Group’s brand of Maritime English language testing, recruitment and e-learning solutions for seafarers, and the UK P&I Club will provide various e-learning courses, in order to improve seafarers' physical and mental health.

The UK P&I club received updates on the tsunami that affected Indonesia on December 22. The club recommends that vessels passing through are alert and try to stay clear of the area, as practically as possible. As the alters in the depth of the water aren't confirmed yet, the area's naval activity isn't busy. 

The UK P&I Club and the TT Club inform about a consignment of aluminium pellets (or dross) that was found at the port of loading with the doors and sides of the container blown out. The terminal arranged to test the samples, as there was no evidence that the unit had been dropped during handling.

The UK P&I Club informed that new articles have recently been added to the Turkish Commercial Code. These articles make it compulsory for parties to refer their commercial disputes to mediation before starting proceedings in court. According to Mr. Sertac Sayhan of Sayhan Law Office, this means that cargo claims have to be taken firstly to a Mediator before being lodged at the Competent Court.
