Seall Passage Planner is the first system to include AIO in a touch screen environment

The United Kingdom Hydrographic Office has announced that Jargoon, a software company specialising in the development of solutions for sea navigation and chart display, now offers the ADMIRALTY Information Overlay (AIO) with advanced functions in its new Seall Passage Planner software tool. AIO is a free service to ADMIRALTY Vector Chart Service (AVCS) customers and the only service available that includes worldwide Admiralty Temporary and Preliminary Notices to Mariners (T&P NMs) as an overlay on ENCs. AIO is also the only service to include the results of the ADMIRALTY Assurance Programme, which is a comprehensive review of the world's Electronic Navigational Charts (ENCs) being undertaken by the UKHO to identify and resolve significant differences between ENCs and existing paper charts, presenting these as ENC Preliminary Notices to Mariners (EPNMs). Seall Passage Planner was launched by Jargoon in November 2013 and is a new software tool that enables mariners to access up-to-date voyage information in order to negotiate routes and reach destinations safely. It has a touch screen functionality which will make it even faster and simpler for mariners to have essential navigation information at their disposal, allowing the mariner to plan their voyage within the Seall Passage Planner application and use a CD, DVD or USB stick to export the ...

New course from Videotel helps cut costs in ECAs

Videotel has launched a new training course, The Practical Management and Switching of Fuels, designed to ensure that switching to low sulphur fuel when operating in Emission Control Areas (ECAs) avoids the serious operational problems that at best impair a ships performance and at worst cause major damage to engines. "In the highly competitive world today of carrying cargo, shipowners face a number of serious issues," explains Nigel Cleave, CEO of Videotel Marine International. "High fuel costs and strict emission controls directly influence the way a vessel's fuel systems and engines are operated and managed. Having a thorough understanding of the challenges presented by using heavy marine fuel oil and switching to low sulphur fuel when operating in Emission Control Areas (ECAs) is essential and this new course from Videotel addresses that need. "Since 2010, many of the busiest shipping areas of the northern hemisphere are now designated as ECAs and require a switch from high sulphur to low sulphur fuel - a process that requires very careful management." The Practical Management and Switching of Fuels is designed to provide a practical guide to what is required of bridge and engine room officers and engineers to process fuel oil from ...

BMT and Sigmund Design Present ‘Illustrious’ Future concept

BMT Nigel Gee (BMT), in partnership with Sigmund Yacht Design, has conceived an audacious design concept to redevelop the Royal Navy's Invincible Class aircraft carrier, HMS Illustrious which will be withdrawn from naval service this year. The UK Ministry of Defence stated that the ship will be preserved after leaving service and innovative proposals from a range of organisations, including private sector companies, charities and trusts are welcome. James Roy, Yacht Design Director at BMT Nigel Gee, a subsidiary of BMT Group, explains: "In recognising the importance of preserving such an iconic vessel, we came up with the idea of a ‘Commonwealth Yacht' where Illustrious could serve all nations of the Commonwealth as a vehicle for promoting trade, attending international events and undertaking humanitarian and disaster relief work around the globe." Commissioned in 1982, Illustrious has been at the core of the Royal Navy's fleet and has seen action both in time of conflict and disaster relief. Most recently, she has served in delivering humanitarian relief to the Philippines following the devastating Typhoon Haiyan. Her decommissioning follows that of Ark Royal in 2011 which was subsequently sent for scrap. Illustrious is the sole remaining carrier of the Invincible class characterised ...
