Guidance on security certification for seafarers agreed

During IMO Sub- Committee on HTW, Session 1, 17-21 February 2014 Until 1 July 2015, relevant ISPS training can be accepted as equivalent to STCW certification (Image Credit: IMO) Guidance on training and certification requirements for ship security officers and seafarers with designated security duties has been agreed by IMO, to address practical difficulties seafarers have reportedly experienced in obtaining the necessary security certification under the 2010 Manila amendments to the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) and STCW Code.The guidance recommends that, until 1 July 2015, relevant training under section 13 (Training, drills and exercises on ship security) of the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code should be accepted as being equivalent to that required under the STCW Convention and Code.The guidance was agreed by the Sub-Committee on Human Element, Training and Watchkeeping (HTW), meeting for its first session from 17 to 21 February 2014, which expressed its concern that large numbers of seafarers were reportedly unable to have access to approved training courses or were unable to be issued certification of security-related training in accordance with the STCW regulations.The Sub-Committee approved an STCW circular onAdvice for port State control officers, ...

Furuno wins new contract to supply ECDIS to Thenamaris

FURUNO HELLAS announced that it has been awarded a new contract to supply ECDIS to THENAMARIS, a global ship manager of ocean-going vessels. THENAMARIS’ fleet under management currently comprises 54 vessels, including 42 tankers, 9 dry bulk carriers, and 3 container vessels.  THENAMARIS LNG Inc. also manages 1 LNG vessel. THENAMARIS has already installed the FURUNO ECDIS system on a number of vessels, including newbuildings, and the new contract was signed for the installation of the Dual FMD-3200 ECDIS Multifunction Display (MFD) sets with Radar overlay across the remaining vessels of the THENAMARIS fleet.  The contract also includes the delivery of FURUNO CAT ECDIS type-specific training module to be installed at THENAMARIS training centers around the world.
