The EU-funded project to expand the Swedish Port of Ystad and make it able to accommodate larger ferries started with a sod-turning ceremony on May 2. The project includes, in addition to two new ferry locations in Ystad Harbor, a new vessel to be fueled by LNG for the Polish shipping company Polferries.

According to Reuters, the US refused to sign an agreement in the Arctic due to discrepancies over climate change wording, risking the cooperation in the polar region at the sharp edge of global warming. The meeting between eight nations in Finland's Rovaniemi on Tuesday, May 7, was aiming to provide a two-year agenda to balance the challenge of global warming, with sustainable development of mineral wealth.

Sweden's SVT supported that some crucial diseases are caused by small particles in the ship's exhaust gases. A new measurement method shows that the correct figure is almost twice as large as the one previously calculated, meaning domestic shipping has a greater environmental impact than domestic flights, reports SVT News.

Sweden is placed fourth in the Top Ten of the Port of Hamburg trading partners and is a strong economy, by achieving a 11.8% growth to 334.000 TEU in 2018. Sweden actually ranks second among trading partners in Europe. Hamburg is linked with Sweden by eleven liner services that are in operation on a weekly basis as a rule.

The Swedish shipping sector is planning to end the use of fossil fuels in the country by 2045, meeting national climate goals. Specifically, the Swedish Shipowners’ Association is creating plan to achieve zero GHG emissions, along with Fossil-free Sweden, a government initiative. Rikard Engström and Svante Axelsson, the heads of the two organisations, said that shipping can become more efficient and switch to biofuels or electricity.

A cargo vessel was damaged after grounding in the Bråviken bay, off Sweden, the Swedish Maritime Administration reported. The vessel named 'Listervik' allied with rocky bottom west of Oxelösund. After the grounding, the vessel was escorted by the Swedish Coast Guard ships to the Port of Oxelosund where it moored in the morning hours of February 8.

The Maritime Connectivity Platform Consortium (MCPC) was established with a signature ceremony during the conference 'e-navigation underway international 2019'. The MCP is an open source, vendor-neutral digital maritime domain to bring common internet standards to maritime navigation and transportation systems. The MCP enables infrastructures for efficient, secure, reliable and seamless electronic information exchange among maritime stakeholders using available communication systems. 

A Volvo Penta powered electric ferry service is being introduced into Gothenburg's ElectriCity transport ecosystem.The new electric-powered ferry will link both sides of the Göta River. Volvo Penta will be the first fully-electric ferry in the city able to complete longer, multi-stop routes along the river, and incorporate quick charging capabilities.

A new ferry that will combine energy efficiency, flexibility and optimised space availability, will soon start operation between Umeå in Sweden and Vaasa in Finland. The ferry will have been constructed by 2021 and will run mainly on LNG. The ship will also be able to burn biogas, while it will incorporate battery power to reduce its emissions while on port.

Stockholm shipping company Waxholmsbolaget has launched Stockholm’s first hybrid ice-going passenger ferry. The ship is powered by hybrid electric propulsion and is serving the Stockholm archipelago. It is able to transport up to 150 passengers. The ferry will help Stockholm become a fossil fuel-free city by 2040.
