Finnish shipyard Rauma Marine Constructions has begun construction of the world's most environmentally friendly RoPax vessel for the consortium Kvarken Link, to operate between Vaasa in Finland and Umeå in Sweden. A traditional steel cutting ceremony was held at the shipyard on 16 September.

The LNG bunker supply vessel Kairos, operated by Nauticor, carried out the first LNG bunkering operation in the port of Södertälje, Sweden, where it delivered 150 tons of LNG. The operation occurred on September 12 at Södertälje’s oil terminal.

Danfoss Editron informed that Sweden's largest hybrid-electric ferry, Tellus, is soon to begin operations. The ferry will mainly operate on a fully-electric mode, bringing the government agency closer to achieving its target of becoming fossil-free by 2045. The ferry will service Sweden's busiest maritime routes, along with more than 100,000 vehicles transported per month, the majority being heavy trucks.

The European Investment Bank has signed a EUR 70 million loan with Kvarken Link Oy, a special purpose vehicle jointly owned by the municipalities of Umeå in Sweden and Vaasa in Finland, to buy a new ferry to transport passengers and vehicles between their two ports.

The Port Esbjerg has adopted the construction of a new, 40,000-m2 multi-terminal in the eastern port area, responding to increased demand for areas for the storage and shipping-out of cargo. The new terminal is expected to be completed by the end of 2019.

The construction of the 450-metre container quay has been completed at Stockholm Norvik Port. This is considered a major milestone in the development of the Port as now its contours can be seen, and the new functionality is emerging. The building of the container quay is now completed and out on the quay crane tracks are being laid, bollards are being equipped and guardrails, barriers and fenders are being installed.

The EU-funded project to expand the Swedish Port of Ystad and make it able to accommodate larger ferries started with a sod-turning ceremony on May 2. The project includes, in addition to two new ferry locations in Ystad Harbor, a new vessel to be fueled by LNG for the Polish shipping company Polferries.

According to Reuters, the US refused to sign an agreement in the Arctic due to discrepancies over climate change wording, risking the cooperation in the polar region at the sharp edge of global warming. Sweden's SVT supported that some crucial diseases are caused by small particles in the ship's exhaust gases. A new measurement method shows that the correct figure is almost twice as large as the one previously calculated, meaning domestic shipping has a greater environmental impact than domestic flights, reports SVT News.

Sweden is placed fourth in the Top Ten of the Port of Hamburg trading partners and is a strong economy, by achieving a 11.8% growth to 334.000 TEU in 2018. Sweden actually ranks second among trading partners in Europe. Hamburg is linked with Sweden by eleven liner services that are in operation on a weekly basis as a rule.
