The Port of Gothenburg has started replanting 1.7 hectares of eelgrass beds to compensate for the eelgrass that will disappear while the port is building a new terminal. It is the largest replantion of eelgrass ever in Sweden. Eelgrass test plantings have now commenced in two locations just outside port area.

On Tuesday night, the towing operation of the grounded car carrier 'Makassar Highway' started for Oskarshamn. The towing takes place in a speed of two knots and is followed by Coast Guard units in case any oil is released. At the current rate, the ship is expected to arrive at Oskarshamn overnight towards Thursday.

Strong winds have caused an small oil leak during fuel oil removal operations from the grounded car carrier 'Makassar Highway' off the Swedish coast, according to the latest update from the Coast Guard. Approximately 7000 liters of oil have been removed so far by Coast Guard ships. 

An underwater inspection of the Panama-flagged car carrier 'Makassar Highway', which ran aground off Sweden in the afternoon hours of Monday, showed that the vessel's hull has sustained an extensive damage, the Swedish Coast Guard informed.

During June 25, the first-ever bunkering of liquefied biogas in Sweden, took place at the Port of Gothenburg. 'Fure Vinga' received 40 cubic metres of LBG directly from a road tanker. This LBG bunkering was the second ever globally, and took place without an incident. LBG can be used in vessels that are using LNG.

On June 2, the Swedish Minister for Infrastructure Thomas Eneroth announced the government's decision to proceed with the deepening of the fairways at the Port of Gothenburg. This will allow larger vessels to call at the Port of Gothenburg fully loaded. The new project will increase the maximum depth of the fairways from 13.5 metres to about 16 metres.

The Danish Maritime Authority increased the international work on digitalization and e-navigation as it entered into a cooperation agreement with South Korea, Sweden, Australia and China. The agreement aims to strengthen the focus on digitalization in the maritime sector.

IMO approved the ship routes in Kattegat and Skagerrak after a proposal from Denmark and Sweden. This step is important because of the much larger size of ships navigating the straits today in comparison to the ships that the route systems were originally designed for. About 70,000 ships a year pass through Kattegat and Skagerrak.

Danish shipping company DFDS and its partners from Geminor and Green Cargo tested a new environmentally-friendly transport of the refuse-derived fuel bales, from Geminor’s waste processing and packaging plant in the UK, to Mälerenergi’s power plant in Västerås near Stockholm.
