The UK MAIB (Marine Accident Investigation Branch) has launched an investigation into a near-miss incident involving a nuclear-powered Royal Navy submarine and a Stena Line-owned ferry in the Irish Sea, in November. 

Stena Line, a Swedish ferry company, launched its first next generation RoPax vessel at the Avic Weihai Shipyard in China. The first new vessel, to be named Stena Estrid, sailed for the first time on January 16. The vessel is to start service on the Dublin to Holyhead route in early 2020. 

Stena Rederi, a part of Swedish shipping company Stena AB, and German Glovis Europe are to collaborate in an attempt to operate car and truck vessels in Europe. Both companies have filed documents with the European Commission's competition authorities to launch their partnership that will operate short-sea transport services on pure car and truck carrier vessels in Europe, according to Lloyd's register.

Stena Line announced that it will conduct a pilot study in which artificial intelligence will be implemented on board. The new AI technology will be added onboard 'Stena Scandinavica'. The model will present the most fuel efficient way of operating a vessel on a particular route.

Hitachi Europe Ltd., a subsidiary of the Tokyo-based technology company Hitachi, has partnered with Stena Line, one of the largest shipping companies in Europe, to implement artificial intelligence technology on ships to reduce fuel consumption costs, in a bid to boost the company’s efforts to minimise environmental impact.

Swedish shipping company Stena Line released its yearly overview for 2017, revealing a 15% decrease in its sulphur emissions, reduced plastic onboard and a decreased number of accidents among the seagoing staff, in line with its sustainability strategy initiated in 2016.

A new collaboration between six organisations, called 'Electromobility for Shipping', intends to promote shipping electrification, with the aim of a more sustainable future in the maritime sector. The organisations will jointly contribute to climate-smart shipping, international competitiveness and increased export opportunities for green technologies.

A new situational awareness system has been launched, aiming to reduce the risks of navigation during night, in bad weather on congested waterways. To do this, the system uses sensors with intelligent software. The new system, will collect data, in order to ensure safe navigation.

Stena Line signed a contract with Callenberg Technology Group for batteries with a capacity of 1 MWh which will be installed on Stena Jutlandica which operates between Gothenburg and Frederikshavn. The battery power in port operation will start before summer.

Swedish Concordia Maritime announced  that it has chartered in two more MR ECO vessels, while in the same time it extended the contracts for two of the currently chartered MR ECO vessels by another year. Furthermore, a contract to charter out the P-MAX tanker Stena Performance has also been signed.
