In its latest article in the Navigating Mutual P&I series, the Shipowners Club focuses on ‘overspill’, explaining how the International Group calculate overspill limits and provides an overview of the collective overspill reinsurance structure.

The Shipowners Club issued a cyber security notice, stressing that companies should not only be aware of external cyber threats but also those that can occur internally. Procedures, rules and training should be put into place to limit the opportunity for cyber-attacks to occur.

The tug Domingue girted and capsized while assisting the container ship CMA CGM Simba departing from the port of Tulear, Madagascar, on September 2016. As a result, two of Domingue’s five crew died. UK MAIB published an investigation report on the accident, providing significant safety issues. 

A booklet published by ISWAN and supported by the Shipowners’ P&I Club provides multilingual questions for the medical assessment and treatment of seafarers in emergency and non-emergency situations. Basic medical questions can be quickly and easily translated from English into Arabic, Bahasa Indonesia, Burmese, Chinese, Filipino, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Thai.

In order to assist operators navigate the sometimes confusing world of mutual P&I, the Shipowners' Club has created an infographic to explain the different elements that make up mutual P&I. A mutual P&I insurer is part of the International Group (IG), which comprises of 13 Mutual P&I clubs.

The Shipowners P&I Club has been made aware of a scam email which is targeting vessel owners and charterers. The email purports to be from a law firm and claims that a lawsuit has been filed by a client as a result of overdue payment, and that legal steps will be taken to arrest the vessel. The attachment sent with the email is known to contain malware, including ransom-ware.

Nautilus International announced that is supporting calls for improved services to help seafarers deal with the increasing pressures of working at sea. The Union is campaigning for greater mental health awareness and for mental health training, to be incorporated into first aid training onboard ships, so that the topic is no longer taboo.

The Shipowners P&I Club issued the second in a series of risk assessment articles, focusing on risk assessments for passenger vessel operations. The Club distinguishes three sample risk assessments: embarking/disembarking of passengers, care of passengers during the voyage and care during emergency situations.

Under its "Seafarers’ Health Information Programme", International Seafarers' Welfare and Assistance Network issued a report on malaria prevention, as the disease causes at least 1 million deaths every year, the majority of which occur in resource-poor countries, such as Africa, south and central America, Asia and the middle east.
