The US Coast Guard revised its Navigation and Vessel Inspection Circular entitled ‘Approval of Navigation Equipment for Ships, by adding an approval process (series) for the Bridge Navigational Watch Alarm System and updating various approval series to reflect the most applicable standards, resolutions, and processes.

According to Tokyo MoU latest PSC report, in 18,943 inspections out of 31,678 inspections which were conducted in the Asia-Pacific, a total of 81,271 deficiencies were reported in 2016. Fire safety measures, safety of navigation and life-saving appliances continue to be the top three categories of deficiencies discovered on ships.

In addition to potential health risks to personal involved with routine handling and clean up of spills, there is also the potential for adverse chemical reactions with vessel components, construction materials, and other items onboard.

AMSA notes that while there was an increase in the detention rate and rate of deficiencies per inspection, the overall picture indicates PSC regime continued to exert a positive influence on the quality of shipping in 2016

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency announced that eight foreign flagged ships were under detention in UK ports, during February 2017, after failing Port State Control (PSC) inspection and publishes details of the foreign flagged vessels detained in UK ports each month.
