NOAA launched an infographic providing tips and information on safe boating, given that many are the accidents taking place at sea. Safety, despite the measures taken, also comes when one is informed about the weather, according to the National Weather System. Weather can cause many accidents, keeping in mind that many have been the casualties when weather conditions have resulted to injuries and fatalities.

The Indian Government launched a mechanism to keep safe the Indian crew members on board Indian or foreign ships and sailing vessels especially in emergency situations like a pirate hijacking or fatal accidents. Shri Mansukh Mandaviya, Minister of State (I/C) for Shipping stated that the Ministry of Shipping has prepared a Contingency Plan and documented Standard Operating Procedures.

Too many shipboard safety drills have become meaningless reminders of procedure. Capt. Yves Vandenborn says good drills should reflect the roller-coaster ride of real-life emergencies. The problem with many safety drills today is that nobody takes them seriously.

Fishing is considered one of the most dangerous occupations in the world and, in spite of improvements in technology, the loss of life in the fisheries sector is unacceptably high.  In order to improve the safety of fishers and fishing vessels, IMO has established, over the years, various initiatives, culminating with the adoption of the Cape Town Agreement of 2012.

The Port of Amsterdam announced a pilot project deploying a sailing drone that inspects the depth of marginal ships at the locks of IJmuiden, in a bid to gain experience in new technologies in nautical processes. The experiment is underway this week, 8-13 July.

Maritime New Zealand ordered an Auckland recreational boatie to pay $5,050 in fines and emotional harm payments after causing a collision on the Waitematā Harbour. Maritime NZ Northern Regional Compliance Manager, Neil Rowarth, stated that Mr Hutchings had put the lives of others in danger by acting recklessly.

The American Club recently experienced an increase in illness claims regarding heat exposure. In order to supply a loss prevention response to this trend, the Club collaborated with Wise Health Inc. Seafarer Outreach to produce guidance to improve seafarers' awareness of measures to avoid such illnesses. The guidance describes heat-related illnesses, and discusses proactive measures to prevent them.

The Logistics Alliance, an association consisting of private companies, sector organisations and infrastructure managers, as the Port of Rotterdam Authority launched a programme to boost the national and international transport and storage of cargo. 

The Society of International Gas Tanker & Terminal Operators Ltd (SIGTTO) published the first output from the Human Element Committee, 'Recommendations for Management of Cargo Alarm Systems', recommending the implementation of alarm management philosophies for cargo alarm systems on gas carriers.

The British Ports Association, British Tugowners Association, Port Skills and Safety, UK Chamber of Shipping, UK Major Ports Group, and UK Marine Pilots Association issued a joint notice to raise awareness against DWHLs use and the consequences. The notice highlights what is expected of seafarers in the International and Domestic codes of the ILO Code of Practice.
