In its latest edition of 'The Navigator', The Nautical Institute explores the importance for ship navigators of always keeping a good lookout by all available means, while maintaining focus and alertness. The most critical piece of equipment on the ship bridge is seafarers' own eyes. Unfortunately this is not always the case, and when a lookout is not maintained, bad things can happen.

The US Coast Guard published a Final Rule in the Federal Register, allowing tankers with automatic pilot systems that meet certain international standards to operate using those systems in shipping safety fairways and traffic separation schemes. The rule will apply from December 5, 2018.

UK government has funded a new study intended to identify future data requirements for autonomous shipping. Comprising partners as the UK Hydrographic Office, L3 ASV and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, the study seeks to explore how navigational and wider geospatial data can be used to enable the safe navigation of smart and unmanned autonomous vessels.

Airbus Defence and Space has launched Ocean Finder, a service delivering satellite-based detection and identification reports for assets at sea. Ocean Finder aims to ensure safety in hostile areas and support search and rescue operations. Its goal is to monitor fleets of ships, locate hijacked boats, detect illegal activities, prepare maritime mission.

In a bid to address errors in ship navigation in pilotage waters, New Zealand's Transport Accident Investigation Commission (TAIC) has created a new Watchlist item to focus the attention of regulators, operators, and training providers on solving the problem.
