The US Coast Guard published a Final Rule in the Federal Register, allowing tankers with automatic pilot systems that meet certain international standards to operate using those systems in shipping safety fairways and traffic separation schemes. The rule will apply from December 5, 2018.

UK government has funded a new study intended to identify future data requirements for autonomous shipping. Airbus Defence and Space has launched Ocean Finder, a service delivering satellite-based detection and identification reports for assets at sea. Ocean Finder aims to ensure safety in hostile areas and support search and rescue operations. Its goal is to monitor fleets of ships, locate hijacked boats, detect illegal activities, prepare maritime mission.
