Rotterdam anticipates great future for biobased industry

 The Port of Rotterdam Authority predicts a great future for the biobased industry, which is why it intends to further strengthen Rotterdam’s leading position in this sector. To provide room for growth, the Port of Rotterdam designated an 80-ha plot with greenfield opportunities at Maasvlakte 2, specifically geared towards an innovative chemical industry that uses biomass as feedstock.(You may click on the infographic above for a larger view) A unique feature of this area is its Plug & Play concept. Rotterdam port: pollution by ships is falling

  In the port of Rotterdam, the number of ships which, via the Environmental Ship Index, have acquired a discount on their seaport dues has increased by 48% to 969 (of the 14,850), in the first half of the year. This means the level of pollution caused by ships is falling. Measurements taken by the DCMR Environmental Protection Agency in the Rijnmond region also demonstrate that the air quality in the region has been improving each year. Structurally, all concentrations of pollutants (such as nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter) are declining, with the exception of ozone. In the Rijnmond region, road traffic is the largest source of various high - but local - concentrations of pollutants. Since 1 January 2015, the SECA for the North Sea has been made more stringent. In this area, the maximum permissible sulphur content of the fuel used by ships is now 0.1%; previously it was 1%. The first measurements taken by DCMR indicate that this has resulted in there being about 20% less SO2 in the air in the western part of the region. Shtandart TT, port of Rotterdam terminate contract for tank terminal

  Shtandart TT, a 100% subsidiary of the Summa Group (Russian Federation), and the Port of Rotterdam Authority have terminated their contract for the construction of the Tank Terminal Europoort West. The terminal, which ultimately would have had a capacity of over 3 million cubic metres of storage space, was intended for transit of Urals crude oil and oil products. At the end of 2010, the Port Authority launched an 'open assessment procedure', which led to a contract with Shtandart TT. At the beginning of 2013, the Port Authority handed over the site to Shtandart, ready for construction. By early 2015 all of the building and environmental permits necessary for construction and operation of the terminal were in place. The contract between the Port Authority and Shtandart TT, which was concluded four years ago, includes agreements on the schedule and the quantities of crude oil and oil products that would be handled at the terminal. Shtandart TT has recently initiated discussions on the feasibility of the project, which have led to the decision to terminate the joint project. Pole route offers advantages for port of Rotterdam

  The melting of the Arctic ice cap means that the northern sea route between Northeast Asia and Northwest Europe is commercially viable. It reduces the shipping route by a third, compared to the southern sea route currently used.  The port of Rotterdam should (be able to) benefit from this, according to the Netherlands Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis (CPB). The CPB is studying the effects of the economic shock associated with the opening of the northern sea route. In the study “Melting Ice Caps and the Economic Impact of Opening the Northern Sea Route”, the CPB outlines such effects as a substantial shift in the bilateral trade flows between Asia and Europe, movement of trade within Europe, heavy shipping traffic passing the North Pole and a considerable decline in traffic through the Suez Canal. These changes in the global trade flows have consequences for the real income and prosperity of the countries involved. The anticipated diversion of trade also has important geopolitical implications. It will lead to the reorganisation of the global value chains within Europe and between Europe and Asia.
