Less than a year since launching a first-of-its kind digital solution to keep cargo flowing efficiently through America’s largest container port, the Port of Los Angeles and GE Transportation are expanding the program, to include all container terminals and shipping lines at the Port.

The Port of Long Beach, in partnership with the Port of Los Angeles, has released a request for proposals seeking demonstrations of technologies to upgrade tugboats, crew boats, barges and other harbor craft to cleaner engines.

The ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach released the draft of their proposed 2017 Clean Air Action Plan update. The document reveals near-term and long-term strategies for the nation’s busiest harbor complex, to further reduce air pollution from port activities.

This week, Evergreen Line’s Ever Sigma container ship discharged the 9 millionth TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) to pass through the Port of Los Angeles in the span of 12 months, setting a new annual record for the most container throughput of any port in the western hemisphere.

The mayors of Long Beach and Los Angeles ports have signed a joint declaration setting ambitious goals for the ports to make the transition to zero emissions in their Clean Air Action Plan (CAAP). They reaffirmed their commitment to adopting the Paris Climate Agreement goals in their cities, and highlighted the two ports’ critical role in achieving them.

The Port of Los Angeles recently announced that together with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers prepared a Draft Environmental Impact Statement/Report for the container terminal located at Berths 226-236 on Terminal Island at the Port of Los Angeles, operated by Everport Terminal Services.

The Port of Los Angeles handled 826,640 Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) in January 2017, an increase of 17.4 percent compared to January 2016. It was the busiest January in the port’s 110-year history, outpacing last January, which was the previous record for the first month of the year. It was also the second-best month overall for the Port, eclipsed only by last November’s 877,564 TEUs.

US EPA has awarded the Port of Los Angeles an $800,000 grant to deploy more of the cleanest commercial equipment available for moving cargo. The award will pay between 25 to 40% of the cost to replace and upgrade 18 pieces of yard equipment at two container terminals

Aggressively deploying zero and near-zero emission trucks and cargo-handling equipment and expanding programs that reduce ship emissions are among the core strategies the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach are proposing for eliminating all harmful air pollution from port-related sources.

Cargo volumes at the Port of Los Angeles increased nearly 16 percent in October compared to the same period last year, marking the busiest month ever at a Western Hemisphere container port, according to data collected by the American Association of Port Authorities.
