NYK has provided free ocean transport for a monument recognizing the Japanese who lost their lives in the devastating earthquake that struck Christchurch, New Zealand, on February 22, 2011. Ocean transport was provided by NYK Line, and overland services in New Zealand and Japan were handled by NYK Group company Yusen Logistics.Of the two monuments that were produced, one was installed at a church in Christchurch, and the other was shipped by NYK at the request of the New Zealand Embassy to Toyama College of Foreign Languages, which lost 12 students in the disaster. NYK together with MC and TEPCO Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK), together with the Mitsubishi Corporation (MC) and the Tokyo Electric Power Company Incorporated (TEPCO), announced their participation in the Wheatstone LNG project, which is being promoted by the U.S.-based Chevron Corporation and other companies in Australia.The consortium of NYK, MC, and TEPCO has obtained equity interests in the project (gas fields: 10%, LNG plant: 8%) through a newly established special-purpose company called PE Wheatstone Pty. Ltd. (PEW), which is headquartered in Perth, Western Australia. PEW will lift a certain volume of LNG in the project in proportion to its equity interest.The project is led and operated by Chevron, and construction work is in progress with the aim of starting LNG production from the end of 2016. The project will produce 8.9 million tons per annum (mtpa) of LNG. How a vessel in port should react to an incoming tsunami NYK has drawn upon the lessons learned from the tremendous tsunami damage sustained by vessels after the Great East Japan Earthquake in March of last year to create tsunami-response guidelines for ships in port. The guidelines, the first to be developed for Japan, were presented on May 23 at a meeting hosted by the Japan Institute of Navigation.The guidelines detail how a vessel in port should react to information about an incoming tsunami, particularly by giving top priority to preserving life and then minimizing damage to the vessel hull and port facilities. The guidelines will be provided as a reference material to assist ship masters in their decision-making process during their review of the circumstances at the time and the changes likely to be caused by the incoming tsunami.For the development of the guidelines, vessel-mooring simulations were carried out to better understand the mooring limits of vessels in port during the onslaught of a tsunami. ECOOL system In April 2012, 50 units of ECOOL, a next-generation energy-saving fluorescent lighting system produced by Optrom, Inc., were installed on a trial basis on the NYK-operated car carrierPyxis Leader. After having tested performances of brightness and durability as well as the attachment mechanics during a one-month voyage, all lighting onPyxis Leader will be changed over to the ECOOL system while the vessel is in dock this summer.ECOOL has superior features both in terms of energy-saving capabilities and economic efficiency, such as smaller power consumption, longer operating life, greater brightness, and gentler lighting on the eyes that is free of flickering, which is achieved by using a cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL), the same that has been used for years in LCD monitors.Because cars are driven on and off car carriers by drivers, bright lighting is desired for the entire cargo hold area - comprising up to 12 decks - to prevent accidents. TVC service will be operated using three 1,000 TEU vessels Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) and Regional Container Lines (RCL) will launch a new joint service, the Thailand-Vietnam-Canton (TVC) service, from the middle of May. the Company's current joint service with Vinalines Container Shipping Company, the Thailand-Vietnam-Singapore (TVS) service, will be terminated at the same time.The TVC service will be operated using three 1,000 TEU vessels. NYK will deploy one vessel, and RCL will deploy two vessels for this new joint service. Approval of NYK Line and Semih Sohtorik ClassNK is part of a voluntary SEEMP certification programme Japanese classification society ClassNK has issued its first certification for Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plans (SEEMP). They are for Japanese shipowner NYK Line and Turkish ship management company Semih Sohtorik Management & Agency Inc (SSMA).ClassNK notes that new amendments to Annex VI of the Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) related to reducing the greenhouse gas emissions from ships were adopted at the 62nd session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) in July 2011. Target of 10% CO2 Reduction NYK's Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan1 (SEEMP) and the company's implementation procedure have been certified by Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) to be in compliance with the IMO Guidelines adopted by MEPC 63, making the company's plan and implementation procedure the first in the world to receive this certificationSEEMP was developed by a specialized working group on greenhouse gas emissions convened by the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) and will incorporate best practices for the fuel efficient operation of ships, such as better speed management throughout a ship's voyage. Such efficiency measures will significantly reduce fuel consumption and, consequently, CO2 emissions.NYK's certification recognizes that its SEEMP complies with the formulation of guidelines adopted at the 63rd session of MEPC (MEPC 63), which was held from February 27 to March 2, 2012. SEEMPs will be mandatory for all ships from January 2013. Ahead of the international regulations, NYK formulated its own NYK Save-Bunker Manual by incorporating specific action plans aimed at efficient ship operation.
