As per an ICC International Maritime Bureau report, a product tanker was attacked by pirates 363 nautical miles south-southwest of Nova Sintra, Cabo Verde, on 17 May, 2024.
According the report, ten armed pirates wielding AK-47 rifles stormed the vessel while it was underway, seizing control of the bridge and forcing all crew members to gather there. The pirates proceeded to restrain the crew by tying their hands and legs.
Afterwards, the pirates ordered the second and fourth engineers to stop engines and drift with the intention of stealing the cargo and bunkers. While waiting for the off take vessel the pirates stole crew and ship properties.
The pirates also claimed to have rigged explosive devices on all exit points. They warned that the crew could only emerge after a two-hour period. However, upon emerging, the crew discovered no traces of either pirates or explosives.
Before making their escape, the pirates inflicted substantial damage to vital equipment onboard. Communication systems, internet connectivity, navigation instruments, and crucial air control pipes for the main engine and cylinder oil flow valves were all compromised.
The crew safely navigated the vessel to the nearest port, and no cargo or bunkers were stolen.
