LR announced its collaboration with Hyundai Global Services, aiming to provide value to the maritime sector through digital solutions, by firstly appraising HGS's Smart Ship System as ‘Digital Class Ready’. Both partners will conduct tests on the system, that will be installed and operate on a ship, to acknowledge if the system is ready to comply with data-driven classification requirements. 

During his speech at Nor-Shipping 2019, IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim delivered a strong reminder regarding the ever-increasing importance of balanced and sustainable development. Mr. Lim also highlighted moves to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the shipping industry.

An ever-increasing focus on sustainability and emission requirements will require major changes for the maritime industry. That was discussed at the Autonomy Summit, which took place on June 4, in Norway. Moreover, during the summit, international players discussed how automation can contribute to emissions reductions.

Norway’s Prime Minister, Erna Solberg made the opening speech at Nor-Shipping 2019, during which she called the shipping industry to urgently pursue decarbonisation. She also warned that regulators are going to get far more strict on the sector soon. She believes however that there is a solution to these problems, which in fact can be found in the ocean.

Wärtsilä revealed its new Navi-Planner voyage planning and optimisation solution during Nor-Shipping 2019. Developed by Transas, a Wärtsilä company, the new Navi-Planner utilizes the connected ECDIS. The new connectivity enables onboard voyage planning to be cut from 5 hours to 30min, and it also aims to provide better navigational safety standard for less experienced seafarers.

The UN Global Compact will hold a High Level Meeting on Ocean as part of Nor-Shipping 2019, gathering politicians, maritime and ocean industry executives, UN representatives, NGOs and other key stakeholders in Oslo. UNGC will also launch its new report 'Global Goals - Ocean Opportunities', in which it assesses a multi-stakeholder approach to how ocean industries can meet the UN Sustainability Goals.

Classification societies are the “helping hands”, that exist to ensure industry meets regulations and operates with the safety and quality that all stakeholders demand of it, said Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen, DNV GL CEO Maritime, while mapping out how class can help maritime navigate the new digital reality.

IMO Secretary General Kitack Lim, Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg, Lise Kingo, CEO of the UN Global Compact, Ann-Christin Andersen, TechnipFMC’s Chief Digital Officer, and technologist Ramez Naam, Chair of Energy & Environmental Systems at Singularity University, are the first high profile names announced for Nor-Shipping Ocean Leadership Conference 2019.

Mrs. Silje Bareksten, Head of Sustainability and Technology at Nor-Shipping admits that she really enjoys her current role in helping to steer the shipping industry towards more socially responsible and sustainable practices.

Nor-Shipping is making its first move outside Norway, with a new initiative to help maritime and ocean industry players "realize the almost limitless business potential of the ocean space". Nor-Shipping’s Opening Oceans Conference, taking place in Copenhagen on 2-3 May 2018, will bring businesses together to discuss key opportunities and facilitate fresh collaborations.
