The B.C. government will continue expanding its ferry routes, despite National Energy Board's statement that specifically BC Ferries generate ship noise that threatens the endangered southern resident killer whales. Although there is a plan to reduce underwater noise, BC ferries alerts that the change will be slow. 

Lloyd's Register has released a new airborne noise emission notation and ShipRight procedure to address increasing demand for a standard and methodology to control airborne noise emissions from ships. The new notation also helps ports determine which and how many vessels can access the most noise sensitive areas of the port.

In 2017, a small group of pioneering ports created an inventory ship-generated noise in berth, at anchor and manoeuvring to get in berth or leaving the berth. The project NEPTUNES - Noise Exploration Program To Understand Noise Emitted by Seagoing Ships -  aims to mitigate the noise pollution from seagoing vessels.

The Standard Club focused on the matter of 'anthropogenic sound', meaning the noise pollution that prevents ocean wildlife organisms from communicating with one another, perceiving prey or finding potential mates.

The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority has expanded its industry-leading EcoAction Program, encouraging vessels that call on the Port of Vancouver to quiet the waters for the endangered whale population along the southern coast of British Columbia. Specifically, the program got into force on January 1, 2019. 

During the 67th annual meeting of the International Whaling Commission, in  Florianopolis, Brazil, three resolutions were agreed on to protect the whales. The first resolution recognizes the important role of whales to the ecosystem, while the other two are tackling the dangers among cetaceans of both noise pollution and getting entangled in ghost gear.

The Indian Ministry of Shipping issued the Draft of its proposed Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) exploring shore power supply to ships in Indian ports, under the national "Green Port" project seeking to reduce air and noise pollution on major ports across India. 

A new feasibility study, led by Sandia National Laboratories with naval architect Glosten, the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and DNV GL, assessed the technical, regulatory, and economic feasibility of a coastal research vessel powered solely by hydrogen fuel cells, to make marine research pollution-free.

The Swedish port of Gothenburg issued its sustainability report for 2017 analyzing how it worked in the past year on steady improvements to reduce the operation’s environmental footprint, under its annual environmental plan, which is based on the City of Gothenburg’s environmental programme.

A new shore power facility has entered into service at the German port of Cuxhaven, in North Sea, west of Hamburg, on 25 May 2018. The ShoreCONNECT in Cuxhaven will mainly be used by vessels transporting Siemens Gamesa’s wind turbine parts.
