NOAA’s Office of Coast Survey announced its plans to change the US Army Corps of Engineers maintained channel depth values on raster nautical chart products, which include paper nautical charts and the corresponding digital raster navigational chart. The change from showing, often outdated, controlling depths, to showing channel project depths on raster nautical chart products, will provide more clarity and safety for mariners.

Scientists with the National Centres for Environmental Information (NCEI) have made an early update to World Magnetic Model (WMM) concerning the unpredictable move from Canada Arctic towards Siberia. Most of the times, an updated version of WMM is published every five years and the scheduled date for new updates was at the end of 2019. 

Although it was not as warm as October, November 2018 ranked as the fifth hottest November on record, with the year to date coming in as fourth hottest for planet Earth, according to scientists with NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information.

For 13th year, NOAA issued its Arctic Report Card reflecting ice and ocean observations made throughout the Arctic during the 2018 calendar year. The report highlights, among others, that the year 2018 was the second warmest year on record in the Arctic since 1900 (after 2016), at +1.7° C relative to the long-term average (1981-2010).

The 2018 Atlantic hurricane season officially concluded on 30 November and will be remembered most for hurricanes Florence and Michael, which caused significant damage in the southeastern US. In total, the season produced 15 named storms, including eight hurricanes of which two were 'major'. An average season has 12 named storms, six hurricanes, and three major hurricanes.

The US National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, NOAA and partners announced $28.9 million in new grants for the restoration or expansion of natural features, such as coastal marshes and wetlands, oyster and coral reefs, coastal rivers and barrier islands, that help minimize the impacts of storms and other extreme events on nearby communities and infrastructure in 22 states and Puerto Rico.

A US court ruled that NOAA Fisheries illegally withdrew a proposed rule that would have established limits on bycatch of protected species caught in California’s swordfish drift gillnet fishery. The decision does not immediately imposes the caps, but requires NOAA Fisheries to either revive the regulations or come up with any potential revisions.

Warmth continued at a steady rate across the world last month, making for the fourth hottest September on record for the globe and the fourth warmest year to date, the latest analysis by NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information informed. The average global temperature in September was 1.40 degrees F above the 20th-century average of 59 degrees.

A new NOAA research looks at the devastating 2017 Atlantic hurricane season. It notes that if similar weather conditions happen in the future, it's likely the number of major hurricanes to increase by two in a similar active year at the end of century. Climate warming would be the cause of this.

The average global temperature in August was 1.33 degrees F above the 20th-century average of 60.1 degrees and this was the fifth highest global temperature for August in the 139-year record (1880–2018), according to NOAA. Last month was also the 42nd consecutive August with temperatures above average.
