During the summer, the two last G3 vessels operated by the Italian Grimaldi Group’s subsidiary ACL, were sold for demolition. NGO Shipbreaking Platform has recently sent a letter to the German authorities asking them to hold ACL accountable for having breached European waste laws.

NGO Shipbreaking Platform reminded that it has been one year since the beaching of the FPSO North Sea Producer in Chittagong, Bangladesh, and the legality of the export is yet to be further clarified.

A total of 210 ships were broken in the second quarter of 2017, and 158 of these ships ended up on South Asian beaches for dirty and dangerous breaking, according to NGO Shipbreaking Platform. The Platform documented five accidents at the shipbreaking yards in Chittagong between April and June, which led to the death of four workers and the injury of two.

NGO Shipbreaking Platform and other stakeholders stressed at EU the paradox between the strict rules under OSPAR, for the decommissioning of oil platforms from the North Sea, with the rules that govern the recycling of floating platforms, as the latter fall under the same rules as commercial ships, and would therefore have to follow the EU SRR.

The Brazilian CONTTMAF trade union federation and its member SINDMAR have recently criticized the shipbreaking practices of Brazilian Transpetro, according to the NGO Shipbreaking Platform. In the last five years, more than twenty vessels owned by the company have been dismantled on India and Pakistan, endangering both workers and the environment.

Two workers lost their lives at the Chittagong shipbreaking yards in the last two weeks, bringing the total death toll this year to six workers, NGO Shipbreaking Platform reported. The NGO, as well as other organizations, inform on the danger associated with shipbreaking practices and call for restriction measures.

NGO Shipbreaking Platform issued its annual report, informing that last year, at least 52 workers lost their lives on the shipbreaking beaches in South Asia. The worst explosion in the history of shipbreaking struck an oil tanker beached in Gadani, Pakistan, killing 28 workers and injuring more than 60.

The NGO Shipbreaking Platform announced that 128 ships were sold for scrap to the South Asian beaches in the first quarter of 2017, reminding that beaching yards offer cheap, but dangerous and polluting scrapping.

After having been informed by the NGO Shipbreaking Platform and its member organisation, Bellona, that the "Tide Carrier" (now named Harrier) had been sold for illegal, dirty and dangerous scrapping to a South Asian beaching facility, the Norwegian environmental authorities arrested the ship, on Tuesday 5 April.
