The Dutch Government decided to deploy troops in order to help in the clean up operation for the over 200 containers that fell from the MSC Zoe containership on January 2. Relevant authorities are warning people not to touch the containers, as some of them contain dangerous chemical substances.

Municipality of Rotterdam and BV Sunny Site Up have signed a letter of intent for the construction of a floating solar park at the Rijnhaven or the surrounding areas. There will be 3,770 solar panels which will be located in the water, together generating sufficient electricity to provide 285 households with clean energy.

Headquartered in the Netherlands, multimodal operator, Samskip, announced that it will lead the challenging initiative to develop autonomous, zero-emissions containerships that, at the same time, operate at a profit.

 ‘The Rotterdam effect - Impact of Mainport Rotterdam on the Dutch economy’ is a study conducted by Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR), commissioned by the Port Authority of Rotterdam which indicates that €45.6 billion or 6.2% of the added value of the Netherlands is due to the Port of Rotterdam.

The doors of the world’s largest sea lock in IJmuiden are heading to the Netherlands. On the night of 23 October the doors left from South Korea and they are expected to arrive in the Netherlands in about two months. The doors are being transferred on a heavy-load carrier. 

In a joint press conference in the Netherlands on Monday, Chinese Premier, Li Keqiang, and Dutch Prime Minister, Mark Rutte, called for global efforts to support and promote free trade and safeguard multilateralism to tackle the current and rising challenges facing the world.

Because of the ongoing period of drought in the Netherlands, and after the advice of the National Water Coordination Committee, the Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management has switched to the so called KWA scenario (‘Klimaatbestendige Wateraanvoer’).

The longest drought in decades is drying out river waterways in the Netherlands, hitting cargo traffic in the inland sector and threatening a shortage of bulk supplies. The summer of 2018 looks set to overtake 1976 as the driest one on record in the country, with almost no rain for two months.

The Dutch National Water Distribution Committee issued a request for measure scenarios, with the aim of limiting saltwater intrusion via the locks at IJmuiden as a result of the drought in the Netherlands. These scenarios are currently being developed. The draught also causes problems for drinking water.

In late May, the European Commission put forward a proposal to ban 10 single-use plastic products most often found on Europe's beaches and seas. However, a number of European countries have already gone ahead with their own laws to combat plastic pollution.
