Activity in the Dutch maritime technology sector, increased slightly in 2018. Total turnover rose to €7.3 billion, about €400 million more than 2017. The total employment was 29,072 FTEs, which marks an expansion of about 4% compared to 2017. Bas Ort, chair of the trade association Netherlands Maritime Technology (NMT), noted that many new orders were received and ships completed in the Netherlands during 2018.

The Netherlands has expressed its support to the Philippines to strengthen the global competitiveness of the country's shipping industry. This announcement came on the sidelines of the 20th Philippines – Netherlands Joint Committee on Maritime Affairs (JCMA) meeting in Manila, in March. 

The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding on offshore wind development. Dutch Consul General Dolph Hogewoning and BOEM Acting Director Walter Cruikshank signed the agreement on 8 April at the Consulate General of the Kingdom of The Netherlands in New York. 

A recent published EY report (Ernst & Young – Dutch Oilfield Services Analysis, 2018) shows how important the offshore industry is to the Port of Rotterdam. As the report notes, Rotterdam is the largest and most important cluster in the Netherlands. The port and city accommodates a number of the largest offshore companies active in the Netherlands.

A consortium of Dutch companies, universities and knowledge institutions have teamed up on the 'Gigawatt Electrolysis Factory' project, recently kicked-off at the Institute for Sustainable Process Technology, aiming to investigate what it takes to build a gigawatt-sized electrolysis plant in the Netherlands around 2025-2030. 

The Netherlands has become the eighth country to ratify the Hong Kong Convention, the treaty for safe and environmentally-sound ship recycling, IMO announced. Mr. Dick Brus, Directorate for Maritime Affairs of the Netherlands, met IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim at IMO Headquarters, in London, on 20 February, to deposit the instrument of acceptance.

On January 20, the first out of three doors of the new sea lock arrived in IJmuiden, as Port of Amsterdam stated in its press release. The door was transmitted to its final destination by a tugboat across the North Sea. With a stopover on the Second Maasvlakte, the door has covered more than 26,000 km between South Korea and IJmuiden. The transport over the last 80 km took 30 hours and went smoothly.

According to Wood Mackenzie, five themes will dominate the market in 2019, including the comeback of North Sea exploration and, although the deal spend will slow, it will remain the seller’s market. WoodMac also sees an increase in development expenditure in 2019 but production will remain flat. In the end, companies with the lowest-cost projects will be the winners this year.

The Dutch Government decided to deploy troops in order to help in the clean up operation for the over 200 containers that fell from the MSC Zoe containership on January 2. Relevant authorities are warning people not to touch the containers, as some of them contain dangerous chemical substances.

Municipality of Rotterdam and BV Sunny Site Up have signed a letter of intent for the construction of a floating solar park at the Rijnhaven or the surrounding areas. There will be 3,770 solar panels which will be located in the water, together generating sufficient electricity to provide 285 households with clean energy.
